Students and staff are invited to join our fortnightly birdwatching walks, starting again on Thursday, 22 January, and continuing every other Thursday throughout Semester 2.
Led by Dr. Mike Wheeler from Biological Sciences, the walks take place on St John’s Campus, where we’ll observe the local bird species, learn a little about them, and spend time in the green spaces around us. These sessions offer a gentle opportunity to step away from daily routines and experience the wellbeing benefits of being in nature.

Research shows that even short periods outdoors can help reduce stress, improve mood, support better focus and memory, and encourage a sense of calm through mindfulness. The group setting also provides a chance to connect with others, which can help reduce feelings of isolation. You can read more on our webpage.
No prior experience is needed, and you don’t require special equipment – binoculars are useful if you have them, but not essential. Simply wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather, and feel free to bring a notebook if you’d like to record what you see or how the walk makes you feel.
After the walk, everyone is welcome to join an optional “Fancy a Cuppa?” session at firstpoint, where you can enjoy a free hot drink and chat about the morning’s sightings.
There’s no charge, but places are limited, so if you’re interested, please book through the Wellbeing Workshops Calendar as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you there.
