World Mental Health Day, observed annually on 10th October, serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of mental health in our lives.
In today’s fast-paced world, mental health issues have become increasingly prevalent. The constant barrage of information, societal pressures, and global uncertainties can take a toll on our psychological well-being.
One of the most significant barriers to addressing mental health issues is the persistent stigma surrounding them. It’s crucial to recognise that mental health struggles do not define a person’s worth or abilities.
World Mental Health Day reminds us that it’s okay to ask for help. Many people suffer in silence, but reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. There are numerous resources available, including STAR appointments from our very own Counselling and Mental Health Service.
The Student Support and Wellbeing team is hosting a special themed “Fancy a Cuppa – Tea and Talk” event to promote mental health awareness and support among students. This drop-in session, running between 1pm and 2pm in firstpoint, offers a perfect opportunity to take a break from your studies, enjoy some free refreshments, and engage in meaningful conversations about mental health.
Join us for a complimentary hot drink and indulge in some delicious cakes. After all, a good cuppa can work wonders for the soul! We will have tea and cake themed quizzes and a chance to connect with fellow students and staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Remember, sometimes the most powerful support comes from simply talking and listening.
Also in firstpoint, we’ve set up a display with free resources for you to take home. These include:
- Information sheets debunking common mental health myths
- Guides on how to start conversations about mental health
- Lists of on-campus and national support services
- Self-care tips and stress management techniques
Remember, you don’t need to be an expert to lend an ear or offer support. Sometimes, just being there and listening can make a world of difference. Join us for “Fancy a cuppa – Tea and Talk” on 10th October and take a positive step towards prioritising mental health on our campus.
World Mental Health Day is not just about awareness; it’s a call to action. We must work collectively to prioritise mental health in our communities, workplaces, and universities. By fostering open conversations, providing support, and advocating for better mental health services, we can create a world where mental health is truly a priority for all. Together, we can create a more supportive and understanding university community.
