World Suicide Prevention Day 2024

Today, 10th September 2024, marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a crucial moment for all of us at the University to come together, raise awareness about mental health, and support one another. This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages us to open up conversations and shift our perceptions about this complex issue.

Breaking the Silence
As students, you face unique pressures—academic stress, social challenges, and personal growth—alongside the usual life challenges such as the rising cost of living and managing our health and wellbeing. These factors can create a heavy burden, making it essential to remember that it’s okay to not be okay. By breaking the stigma surrounding mental health discussions, we create an environment where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

Support is Always Available
Our university’s Counselling and Mental Health Service are here for you. They offer confidential support, providing a safe space to talk about your concerns and develop coping strategies. Don’t hesitate to reach out – taking that first step can make a world of difference.

PAPYRUS: A Lifeline for Young People
PAPYRUS, a UK charity dedicated to preventing youth suicide, operates HOPELINE247, a free and confidential helpline available 24/7, 365 days a year. Their trained advisers are there to support you or anyone you’re worried about.

Creating a Supportive Community
Each of us has the power to make a difference:

  • Start the Conversation: Check in with your friends. A simple “How are you really doing?” can open the door to meaningful discussions.
  • Listen Without Judgment: Sometimes, being heard is the most valuable support we can offer.
  • Know the Resources: Familiarise yourself with university and national support services. There is guidance on the firstpoint webpages. Knowledge is power when it comes to helping yourself or others.
  • Remember to look after yourself too: If you have concerns about a friend, you can speak with a Student Life Adviser for advice on looking after yourself while you support someone else. Email studentlife@worc.ac.uk or contact firstpoint to book an appointment.

Hope Through Action
Remember, there is always hope. By working together to change the narrative on suicide, we can create a more supportive and understanding university environment. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a culture where mental health is prioritized and lives are saved.

Let’s pledge to be there for one another, to listen without judgment, and to seek help when needed. Together, we can build a community where everyone feels valued, understood, and supported.
