Celebrating Unity at the University of Worcester

You may have noticed that the Universtiy’s Christmas trees have gone up, and this year the trees in the Edward Elgar Reception, Charles Hastings Reception, the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Building, and in firstpoint, have been decorated with a theme that feels more important than ever: Unity.

Unity is at the heart of our University community. It reminds us that while each of us brings unique qualities, experiences, and perspectives, together we create something stronger and more beautiful. Like the colours of a rainbow, our diversity does not divide us – it enriches us. When we stand together, support one another, and celebrate what makes each of us different, we shine brighter.

The rainbow trees reflect this message. Each band of colour represents the individuality within our community, and the way those colours combine to create harmony and hope. The handmade decorations themselves have been lovingly crafted by our Student Wellbeing Champions, a team dedicated to supporting student wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging. Their work goes beyond crafting ornaments – they help create spaces where students feel valued, heard, and supported.

This theme was inspired by the words of writer Jyoti Arora:
“A rainbow is beautiful not because it has different colours. It is beautiful because those different colours shine together. They don’t go away from each other. They don’t boast of their supremacy. They don’t try to overwhelm each other. They complement each other to create beauty through the gloomy sky. That’s the power and magic of unity in diversity.”

As you pass by these trees, we invite you to pause and reflect on what unity means to you. How can we, as a University community, continue to support and complement one another so that everyone can thrive? Together, we can make this season – and every season – brighter.
