As the UK days get shorter, we’re here to help you with additional tips and advice to stay cosy in your accommodation and across campus this autumn and winter. Many of us worry about the cost of heating our flats and homes, however there are lots of cost-effective ways in which you can stay warm and comfortable during the colder months.
- The University’s Heating and Comfort Policy aims to maintain internal temperatures of 19°C in all University accommodation.
- This is in place during the colder months, between 1st October and 30th April
- The heating is programmed to be active from 8am to 11pm, seven days a week.
Remember, electric heaters are not permissible in student accommodation, therefore please check with the accommodation team if you have such items in your room or flat. Our Facilities Team have included some tips below to help you stay as warm as possible this Autumn/ Winter:
Wear Warm Layers of Clothing
- Dressing appropriately for the weather is important all year round.
- During colder months, wearing extra layers of clothing can help you to keep warm.
- Each additional layer of clothing can improve comfort by 2-3°C!
Don’t Obstruct Radiators
Placing objects in front of radiators can block the heat from reaching other parts of your room. Ensure radiators are not blocked by furniture or other obstructions. It’s a good idea to check that the thermostatic valve on your radiator is turned to the correct setting – if you’re living in University of Worcester accommodation, ask a Residential Life Team Member to help you with this.
Only Open Windows When Necessary
Remember to open windows for a short time if your room needs airing – this can prevent any damp from occurring.
If your room is too hot, this may be an issue that needs investigating – there is more information about this in Step 5 of this guide.
Take Regular Movement Breaks
Try not to sit still for too long – moving every so often will increase your blood flow which will help to keep you warm. You can also access also access a wide range of warm study spaces across campus, including the Pierson Guidance and Study Centre, the Hive library and the many places to eat and socialise on campus.
Reporting Heating Issues or Concerns
- If you are concerned that your accommodation is not at the right temperature, please report this to the Facilities Helpdesk. You can access this via your MyDay page.
- If you’re having trouble with this, please call the Facilities Helpdesk on 01905 543344.
