FIRSTPOINT’S FIVE POINTS ABOUT YOUR STUDENT ID CARD…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, a reminder to bring your DBS certificate to firstpoint if applicable, and did you know all the things that your student ID card can be used for?

POINT ONE:  IT’S AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF ID…

Your student ID card is your official proof that you are a student at the University of Worcester. You should never give your ID card to another student to use. It is a good idea to have your ID card with you at all times when at University so you can be identified as a student, and it also helps staff locate your student record or accounts when needed. You will also use it as proof of ID for exams, trips, sports events and for visits to firstpoint

If you lose or damage your card, you can order a replacement for £10. Visit the Student Cards Replacement webpage. In the meantime, there is a virtual version of your ID, available on your MyDay portal

POINT TWO:  PRINTING ON CAMPUS AND AT THE HIVE…

If you need to print on campus, you can scan your student card on the campus or library printers, this will bring up your account and allow you to choose the documents you want to print. You can add printing credit to your card with debit or credit cards at the kiosks next to the printers. If you want to use cash to top up your printing credit, you will need to visit the kiosks at the Hive.

For information about printing on campus, visit the IT webpages.

POINT THREE:  BORROWING AT THE LIBRARY…

Your student card is also your library card, when you want to borrow books at The Hive. Using your student card, you can borrow up to 12 books from The Hive and at all Worcestershire County Council libraries. For details of what you can borrow and how long you can keep your loans, visit the Library Services webpages.

POINT FOUR:    GETTING INTO HALLS OR UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS…

If you live in University accommodation, your student card is often used to get access to your particular building.  Most buildings will have activation points at the front entrance, but you can always visit Security at the main reception in the Edward Elgar building on St John’s Campus or in the Charles Hastings building on City Campus where they can update your access if needed.  You may have been issued a temporary card when you first arrived, and you’ll need to swap this to your permanent ID card as soon as you’ve registered, if you’ve not done so already.

If your lectures or activities are based in a building which has restricted access, such as the Art House, Jenny Lind or the Riverside Fitness Suite, your card can be enabled to give you specific access, as is appropriate.

You can also have 24-hour access to the Peirson Study and Guidance Centre added to your card, so you’ll be able to use campus computers and printers or loan a laptop for a few hours at a time to suit you!

Head to the security team on main reception to request the access and remember if you’re ever unsure who to ask or where to go, come and ask us here at firstpoint

POINT FIVE: DON’T FORGET YOUR DBS….

Some students will have been asked to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) as part of your course requirements, or perhaps for a specific module you have selected this year.

You will only need a DBS if your placement involves regulated activities with children or vulnerable adults.  Therefore, it’s important to ensure you have your placement confirmed, or you have specifically been asked to apply by our Admissions service at your course entry point and have been advised a DBS is required before starting the application process and incurring any costs.

When your check has been completed, you will receive a paper DBS certificate in the post. Don’t forget to bring your DBS certificate to firstpoint St John’s Campus, along with your student ID card, so that the details can be added to your student record by a member of the team – We never keep your DBS certificate, we only record the details onto your SOLE page.

The certificate itself remains your property and your responsibility to keep safe. You may be asked to show it again, either by your placement or the University.

Remember, if you’re not sure where to start, or who to ask, ask firstpoint – we’re here to help!
