Celebrate Your Graduation: what to expect on the day

Hey there, graduands! The big day is almost here, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you on 10th, 11th, and 12th September 2024. This is your moment to shine, and we’ve got everything you need to know to make it unforgettable.

To answer a very frequently asked question: what is a graduand? That’s you! A university student who has finished their studies, but who has not yet fully graduated.

Your graduation day will be divided into three exciting parts: preparation, the ceremony, and the reception.

The preparation

To kick things off, you should plan to arrive at Severn Campus about two hours before your ceremony. This will give you plenty of time to collect your gown, snap some photos, and make your way to the Cathedral. Don’t worry—your guests can join you during this process, and our friendly staff will be around to guide you.

If you’re driving, there’s limited free parking available at Severn Campus (WR2 5JN). If that fills up, don’t fret – you can park for free at St John’s Campus (WR2 6AJ) or Moors Car Park (WR1 3ED). There are also pay-and-display options nearby, like Pitchcroft and Croft Road.

When you arrive, head to the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Building to check in and grab your tickets and academic gown. This eye-catching golden building is hard to miss. After you’re all dressed up, make your way to the photography studios in the same building for your official photos. Just a heads up—indoor photography isn’t allowed at the Cathedral, so be sure to capture those moments before you head over.

The Ceremony at Worcester Cathedral

Make sure to arrive at Worcester Cathedral at least 40 minutes before your ceremony begins. This gives you enough time to check in and find your seat. A quick tip: since you’ll be walking up a short ramp to access the stage, choose your footwear wisely!

Seating for your guests is on a first-come, first-served basis, so they’ll have the freedom to pick their spots. Some seats may have restricted views, but don’t worry—screens will be set up around the Cathedral for better visibility. When you arrive, enter through the ‘North door,’ where our staff will be ready to assist.

As a courtesy to the Dean and Chapter of Worcester Cathedral, please remove your mortar board while inside. University and Cathedral staff may check your bags, so keep that in mind.

Graduands will be seated together in pre-assigned spots, ensuring you’re called to the stage at just the right moment.

The ceremony will feature speeches from University and Cathedral staff, and the highlight will be when your name is called. You’ll cross the stage for a professional photo, but remember, no indoor photography is allowed. After the ceremony, you can take all the photos you want outside.

For those who can’t make it in person, we’re excited to announce that each ceremony will be live-streamed. Friends and family can tune in from anywhere, and the stream will be available for two weeks after graduation.

Once the ceremony wraps up, staff will guide you out of the Cathedral. Please exit promptly to keep things moving, but don’t worry—you’ll have time to snap some pictures with your fellow graduates before heading back to Severn Campus for the reception.

The Reception at University Arena

After your grand exit from the Cathedral, you’ll have about an hour to enjoy the reception at the University Arena. Make sure to check your schedule for your designated departure time, as it’s important to leave on time for the next ceremony.

When you arrive at the reception, University staff may check your bags, but you’re free to mingle and celebrate with your classmates and staff.
While attending the reception is optional, you must return your academic gown and cap to Severn Campus. The reception is a laid-back gathering where you can enjoy some drinks and take photos in your cap and gown. Just follow the signs for gown returns at the University Arena.
