We were deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of two young people in Kent over the weekend following a reported outbreak of meningitis. Our heartfelt condolences are with their families, friends and fellow students.
We know this can be worrying for many students and are writing to share some information to help you feel informed, supported and confident about what to do if you have concerns.
We have not been notified of any cases at the University of Worcester or the local area. However, meningitis is a very serious illness, and you should seek urgent medical help if you think you have the symptoms.
Know the symptoms
Symptoms can appear suddenly and may initially feel like flu. Key signs to look out for include:
- A rash that doesn’t fade when pressed with a glass
- High fever or feeling very unwell
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Sensitivity to light
- Cold hands and feet
- Confusion, difficulty waking, or seizures
Please see the NHS information on meningitis for more information
It’s really important to regularly check on your friends if they are unwell. If you think you or someone else has meningitis or sepsis it is important to act quickly and seek medical attention by dialling 999, asking for an ambulance and explaining that you think it is meningitis.
Trust your instincts and do not wait for all the symptoms to appear or until a rash develops. Someone with meningitis or sepsis can get a lot worse very quickly.
Call NHS 111 for advice if you’re not sure if it’s anything serious or you think you may have been exposed to someone with meningitis.
Vaccination protects you
We strongly encourage all students, especially first years and those who haven’t yet done so, to make sure you are vaccinated against meningococcal disease (MenACWY). Speak to your GP about receiving this vaccination.
Advice on registering with a GP if you are not already registered.
You can find out more about vaccinations on the Meningitis Now vaccinations webpage.
