FIRSTPOINT’S FIVE POINTS ABOUT MODULE SELECTIONS…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, we’re here to help you to plan and prepare for your next academic year module selections, including advice and guidance on deadlines and making changes…

POINT ONE:  KNOW YOUR DEADLINES…

All continuing students are asked to make their module selections for the following academic year in February.  This allows you to plan ahead for your progression and ensures that the module numbers and plans can be confirmed prior to the start of the new academic year.

The module selection deadline for the 2026/27 academic year is Friday 27th February 2026

The ‘Select Modules’ task will remain open for students who have failed to submit their selections by the deadline, for students returning from temporary withdrawal and for students who are changing course, but after the deadline date modules that have low numbers of student take-up may be withdrawn for 2026/27 and so it’s important to make your selections on time where possible.

It’s not too late if you later decide to make a change to your module selection. Students are normally able to add or remove modules within the first two weeks of the first scheduled timetabled occurrence of a module.

You can find answers to lots of frequently asked questions on Module Selections on the Registry pages found here

POINT TWO:  UNDERSTANDING MODULE CODES…

For undergraduate courses, a full-time student will normally study level 4 modules in the first year and then progress onto level 5, normally in the second year.  The final year (year 3) will normally consist of all level 6 modules.

If you are a full-time student, you should select 120 credits for the academic year, 60 in each semester. If you are a part time student you should select a maximum of 90 credits over the academic year, between 15 and 45 in each semester.

It is important that you select the correct module for your subject and the year you are studying. The letters at the beginning of the code indicate the subject area the module is from, therefore BMGT is Business, SPRT is Sport etc. The numbers in the module code indicate what level the module is. For example:

  • Level 4 codes begin with a ‘1’ e.g. BMGT1220
  • Level 5 codes begin with a ‘2’ e.g. BMGT2000
  • Level 6 codes begin with a ‘3’ e.g. BMGT3200

Level 7 codes begin with a ‘4’ e.g. BMGT4321

POINT THREE:   MAKING A CHANGE…

If you change your mind about a module you’ve selected, there is a module change option.  You are able to request a change to your module as long as it is no later than two weeks after teaching begins in the new semester, and so if your priorities change as you progress on the course do not worry, there are opportunities to make changes from your original selections.

You can submit a Module Change Request via SOLE – this can be found under the Course Information tab.  You will be asked which module you would like to drop and which you would like to add and then the request will be reviewed by the Programme Advisers and the decision communicated to you.

Please note, it can take up to five working days for your timetable to update following a module change

You can find more instructions for Changing modules here.

POINT FOUR:  WHAT IF I EXPERIENCE ANY ISSUES DURING THE PROCESS…

The Student Records Office maintains students’ personal and academic details and ensures your modules are recorded correctly on your individual record. If you experience any issues during your module selection, the department can offer some support and guidance where appropriate. The Student Records Office has also produced some handy ‘How to Guides’ on module changes found here

You can email studentrecords@worc.ac.uk, including your student ID number and the details of the modules you are trying to select, or just simply get in touch with us here in firstpoint, we’re here to help point you in the right direction! You can find all our contact details on the firstpoint webpages here.

POINT FIVE: WHERE CAN I SEEK FURTHER ADVICE OR GUIDANCE…

If you think you would benefit from some extra guidance about your modules this semester, you can speak to the Programme Advisory Service for individual advice. This specialist team helps students with their planning and registration of their programmes of study.

The service is available Monday to Friday throughout both semesters (except Bank Holidays and university closure days) and during most weeks outside semesters, (sometimes with reduced hours).
Students may contact any of the Advisers by telephone: 01905 542727.  Lines are usually open 11am – 12:30pm and 1:30pm – 3pm.  To check the phone line opening hours and any ad hoc closures, please see the Programme Advisers webpage here.

You can also find out more information about aspects of studying on the firstpoint webpages – we have dedicated areas for Course and Study and Who Can Help to guide you.
