FIRSTPOINT’S FIVE POINTS ABOUT MOVING OUT OF HALLS…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, as we are fast approaching the end of the academic year, many of you will be wondering what you need to do when it comes to moving out of your accommodation…

POINT ONE:  PACKING UP…

It may only seem like yesterday when you first moved in, however it’s a good time to start getting organised and make sure you plan what needs packing!

You will need to remove all your belongings from your accommodation – don’t forget to take anything that you have in the communal areas, especially if you have personal kitchen items you would like to reuse next year.

Ensure that your accommodation is left secure – please close all windows and lock doors and remember to turn off taps and lights.

POINT TWO:  CLEAN EVERYTHING…

Be sure to clean your room and the communal areas, removing all rubbish and food from cupboards, fridges, and freezers.  Any unwanted tinned food can be donated to the Food Bank or the Student’s Union community pantry.

The Accommodation Team will be providing cleaning packs for all halls and houses so that you can ensure that everything is spick and span when you leave.  These will be delivered to you by the team – plan how you can work together as a whole flat group, when it comes to communal areas – why not allocate a task to everyone so it doesn’t feel too overwhelming!

If you are not the last one to leave, it may be worth taking photos of communal areas when you vacate, to show how you have left it.

POINT THREE:  RETURNING YOUR KEYS…

Keys can be returned to the St John’s or City Reception Teams, or the Accommodation Hub.  Envelopes will be provided for you at these locations to return keys in.  Please ensure that you complete the information on these fully.

Failure to return keys will result in locks being replaced and this charge being passed on to you.  The same goes for any keys that we cannot identify.

POINT FOUR:  REPORT DAMAGES EARLY…

Make sure you have reported any damage to your room or communal area by logging a maintenance request via the ‘Facilities Helpdesk’ section on your MyDay page.

Your room will be inspected after you leave, and any damage may affect your deposit repayment.

Leaving your accommodation clean and tidy also helps to ensure that deductions are not made unnecessarily from your deposit.

POINT FIVE:  GETTING BACK YOUR DEPOSIT…

You can expect your deposit return a maximum of 28 days after your contract ends.  You’ll be notified by email of any deductions.

If you have any concerns about your deposit, you can reach out to the Accommodation Team or speak to us in firstpoint and we can point you in the right direction. You can email us on firstpoint@worc.ac.uk, give us a call (on 01905 542551) or pop in and see us in the Peirson Study and Guidance Centre. Our opening hours can be found on the firstpoint webpages.
