FIRSTPOINT’S FIVE POINTS ABOUT EXAM WEEK…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, it’s exam week…

POINT ONE:  PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE…

The key to good performance is preparation.

  • Try to have a good night’s sleep – don’t stay up late revising the night before and don’t forget to set an alarm for the morning!
  • Leave yourself enough time to have a good breakfast, you’ll need the energy.
  • Check your route into University, if you’re driving or using public transport make sure the roads or rails are clear and build in some extra time in case you hit any traffic, or the trains are cancelled.

Put in a ‘Plan B’ ready, just in case you have any issues on the day – it will help you feel in control of your situation, remain calm and will (hopefully!) reduce any last-minute stress if you need to switch plans on the day!

POINT TWO:  REMEMBER YOUR ID…

Don’t forget – You need to provide photographic ID to prove your identity and gain entry to your exam. Acceptable ID includes your student ID card, a driving licence or passport. Double check you have it with you before you leave the house!

If you do arrive and realise that you don’t have ID with you, don’t panic.  You can quickly order and pay for a replacement ID card on route using our online replacement card system. Simply pop into firstpoint and we can print this off whilst you wait. There is a £10 charge and make sure you leave plenty of time as there may be a queue.

POINT THREE:  BE CLEAR ON EQUIPMENT…

For some exams you will be allowed to take in additional equipment, such as a calculator or a specific textbook. Check these details in advance as there are penalties for taking prohibited items into your exam.

If you need to bring personal belongings with you to University, we recommend checking out the secure lockers, which are available on all campuses.  You will need your student ID card to access them, and you can keep your things in them for the day.

POINT FOUR:  CHECK YOUR TIMETABLE…

Your exam timetable is made available to you on your SOLE page, under the ‘Assessments’ tab.

Check the timetable (and check it again!) so that you are sure what time your exam is due to start. We strongly recommend that you arrive 30 minutes before your exam begins.

If you are running late, you may still be able to join your exam, so do continue to make your way to the exam location and speak to a member of staff.

If you are feeling unwell during the exam, or anything is affecting you on the day, you could make a claim for mitigating circumstances.

You can find out lots of helpful information about this, and other common exam questions on the Registry Services Exam webpages here

POINT FIVE: FIND YOUR WAY…

You might find it helpful to visit the room where the exam is taking place before the day, so that you are familiar with the location. No need to add last minute stress by running around campus trying to find the right room!

If you are not sure of the location of the building or room where your exam is due to take place, pop in and see us in firstpoint and we can provide you with a map, or you can use the Accessable Guides, Campus Locations page and for help working out what the building abbreviations stand for take a look on the Building Abbreviations page.

AND FINALLY – Don’t forget that the ‘Fancy a Break’ sessions, hosted by our friendly Wellbeing Team, are still running every day this week in firstpoint to give you some much needed downtime between your exams. With hot drinks, mindfulness activities and visits from our Pets as Therapy dogs on Tuesday and Thursday, you can take time to relax and rest between your exams.
