FIRSTPOINT’S FIVE POINTS ABOUT LIBRARY SERVICES…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, find out about the incredible range of resources and support available to you through the Hive Library and Library Services…

POINT ONE:  THE HIVE…

The Hive is an outstanding space for students to study, to access resources and to share experiences.  With over a quarter of a million books and 12 miles of archive collections, The Hive is no ordinary library. Opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2012, The Hive is Europe’s first fully integrated university and public library. It has a busy events programme, with regular public lectures, exhibitions and performances.

The Library Borrowing Services allow you to borrow items from the Hive or any Worcestershire branch library using your University of Worcester student or staff ID card. You can use your library account to reserve or renew items, or even borrow items by post.

If you’re in Worcester, sign up to one of the Hive tours here to find out more about using the library: finding study spaces to suit your needs, borrowing and returning books, using the print and copy facilities and accessing the PC’s and Wi-Fi.

If you’re studying away from home, the library has a range of spaces, from shared to silent study.

POINT TWO:  ‘ASK A LIBRARIAN’…

The Academic Liaison Librarians are also here to help you with more in-depth research enquiries, referencing or getting to grips with online resources.  You can contact them through the online enquiry form at Ask a Librarian, by email on askalibrarian@worc.ac.uk, and via the Live Chat

The Library Services study skills pages, FAQs and blog posts offer lots of helpful hints and tips to help you get the best out of your research and writing skills, including referencing, getting started with Library Services and borrowing books.

POINT THREE:  RESOURCES AND REFERENCING…

With options to book onto Study Skills Live sessions, you also have access to a wide range of resources to support your studies, including subject guides across all academic schools and module resource lists.

On a Teacher Training course…you can also access our helpful Teaching collection.

The Hive also provides access to a wide research collection, including local heritage, archaeological resources, literature and more…You can view these collections by appointment only Tuesday-Saturday, simply email to arrange an appointment

Our Librarians can also support you to feel more confident in academic referencing. Whether you use Harvard, APA, Vancouver, OSCOLA or MHRA, you’ll find helpful video guides to follow, or simply contact the librarian team to arrange an appointment for one-to-one support.

Study Happy is a year-round programme designed to help you study healthier, happier and smarter. Find out more from our Study Happy from anywhere video and student-led Study Happy Resource List

You’ll find advice and support on how to eat and drink happy, exercise happy, rest happy and sit happy, leading to healthier study habits and improved health and wellbeing during your degree.

POINT FIVE:  GET INVOLVED…

Did you know that you may be able to get involved in a range of volunteering or work placement opportunities at the Hive, to boost your skills, provide useful work experience and be part of the vibrant local community.

Work placements are project based and can be tailored to suit your interests and length of placement.

Hive volunteers are involved in a wide range of activities including welcoming visitors, supporting selections of books or becoming a digital champion.
