The third Monday in January, traditionally known as “Blue Monday,” is no longer just a day of perceived gloom. Thanks to the Samaritans, it has been transformed into Brew Monday – a powerful initiative encouraging human connection and mental health support.
In 2005, when a travel agency coined the term “Blue Monday” as supposedly the most depressing day of the year, the Samaritans responded brilliantly. Instead of accepting the negative narrative, they created Brew Monday as a positive countermovement. While the shorter daylight hours during the winter months can contribute to low mood, we can work together to create a positive atmosphere.
Semester Two
This year, Brew Monday falls on 20th January, which is also the first day of Semester Two. For some of you, this will be your first day back on campus after the Christmas break. For new students, this may be your first day on your course. It’s not uncommon that transitioning from a home environment to an academic one can trigger stress and homesickness, while financial pressures after holiday spending can feel overwhelming.
We know university life can be challenging, and sometimes, all you need is a moment to pause and connect with others. Brew Monday is about fostering that connection as well as providing a space where you can feel supported, seen, and part of our university community.
What is Brew Monday?
Brew Monday is a simple yet profound concept: invite people to share a cup of tea or coffee and have a meaningful conversation. The goal is to:
- Combat loneliness
- Provide emotional support
- Challenge the myth that mental health struggles are confined to a specific day
- Encourage open dialogue about mental wellbeing
The campaign emphasises that mental health challenges aren’t determined by a calendar. Whether you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just need connection, Brew Monday offers a welcoming space to talk, listen, and feel supported.
What is “Fancy a cuppa?”
“Fancy a cuppa?” is our regular, twice weekly wellbeing drop-in, an opportunity for students to speak with support staff and meet other students in an informal, casual setting. It is hosted by Student Wellbeing Champions and Student Services Staff, and is open to all students across all years and academic courses. We serve free hot drinks, plus biscuits!
For Brew Monday, we will host an additional “Fancy a cuppa?” on Monday 20th January, between 1pm-2pm. You’ll find us in our usual spot in firstpoint, on the St John’s Campus. We’d like to invite you all to:
- Meet new friends and members of staff
- Share a hot drink
- Have an honest conversation
- Listen without judgment
- Remember that connection can be a lifeline
Brew Monday reminds us that a simple cup of tea and a genuine conversation can make a significant difference in someone’s life
