Stay warm at University this Autumn/Winter

Many of us worry about the cost of heating our flats and homes, however there are lots of cost-effective ways in which you can stay warm and comfortable during the colder months. Our Money Advice pages can provide you with practical budgeting tips, advice to boost your income, and helpful links to financial support for students.

Remember, electric heaters are not permissible in student accommodation, therefore please check with the accommodation team if you have such items in your room or flat.  We’ve included some tips below to help you stay as warm as possible this Autumn/ Winter:

Go for layers – wearing lots of layers, rather than one thick one, can help to trap your body heat and keep you warmer for longer – you don’t have to spend money on high brand thermals, you may be warm enough simply layering clothes you already own. A warm set of fleece pyjamas at night will also help you stay snug.

Choose your bedding – consider a thicker tog duvet, or a fleece blanket to stay cosy through the night.  In the UK, a tog of 10-15 is perfect in the colder months for additional warmth.

Embrace a hot water bottle – a hot water bottle is a low-cost way to keep warm on colder days – snuggle up in front of the TV or warm your bedding for extra comfort.  As always, please make sure you handle hot water safely – ensure the stopper is tightly secured, add a splash of cold water into the bottle first and always wrap the bottle with a towel or soft cover to avoid direct skin contact.  Why not check the money saving expert pages for how to check your hot water bottle is safe.

Use a draught excluder – We can lose a lot of heat through any gaps in windows or doors, by lining these with a simple draught excluder, you can retain more heat inside your room and avoid those chilly draughts.  Why not make a homemade version using old socks and tights!
