firstpoint’s five points about welcoming PGCE and Nursing students…

Every Monday, firstpoint publishes five points about a topic related to life at university. This week, we’re welcoming some of the nursing and PGCE students …
POINT ONE: WORCESTER WELCOME FESTIVAL

We know that your courses have started a little earlier than the majority of other courses, however that means you get the benefit of checking out the university and settling back in before it gets busy.  Check out the Welcome Festival 2024 webpage – there’s lots to get involved in to help you settle in, meet new people, find your way around campus and prepare for university life.  There are events for everyone, from quiet on-campus meet ups, quizzes, a vintage clothes sale and dance nights, as well as Clubs and Societies Fairs.

POINT TWO: ASK FIRSTPOINT

At firstpoint, we’re here to help you access information and support during your studies. If you’ve got a question, whatever it might be, we’re a good place to start. You can visit us on the St John’s Campus, in the Peirson Study and Guidance Centre, phone us on 01905 542551 or email firstpoint@worc.ac.uk

You’ll also find lots of helpful information (including our opening hours) on the firstpoint webpages

Sometimes you might have a question that seems a bit weird, or you may not be sure if we’re the right people to ask… Don’t worry, we’re here to listen. If we can’t answer your question ourselves, we’ll do our best to find the correct department for you.

POINT THREE: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR INDUCTION ACTIVITIES

Whether you’re a new student this year or a returning student, during your induction week you’ll have lots of different activities planned to help you settle in and feel confident for the start of your course.  Some of these will be mandatory sessions, but we’d really recommend you make the most of the non-mandatory sessions also, such as Library tours or the Student’s Union society welcome events, as these will give you a really good starting point for the academic year and help you embed yourself in the course and student life.

POINT FOUR: LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF

We know that your courses can be quite intense, with longer hours and placement activity and so it’s really important to look after yourself.   Check out our ‘Transitioning into Student Life’ webpages which includes information you may find helpful to view before you start your course, as well as advice on looking after your wellbeing, dealing with any anxieties you may have, getting a balance and planning for the year ahead, so that you can make the most of your time here and fulfil your potential.  Be kind to yourself and ask for help when you need it.

POINT FIVE: WE’RE HERE ALL YEAR

We know there will be a lot to take in at the start of the year, lots of new people to meet and things to learn and it may not be for a few weeks where you start to think of additional questions or need some support or advice.

We just want to reassure you that we’re here to support you all year, we’re here to help with initial welcome and settling in questions, but in a few weeks’ time if you think ‘hmm, not too sure what to do now or who to ask for help’, come and have a chat to us – we’re here to support and guide you through university life.

You can pop in and see us, give us a call on 01905 542551 or send us an email on firstpoint@worc.ac.uk
